Supergirl returns with its midseason premiere on January 15th, 2018. The CW has released our first official look at Mon-El and Saturn Girl in their Legion of Superheroes costumes, in addition to other first looks from season 3, episode 10—Legion of Superheroes.

While the outline to the kryptonian symbol for hope is a nice homage to Mon-El’s relationship to Kara/Supergirl, the black leather costume seems out of place for modern day comic book adaptations. It’s hard to find any homage to his comic book counterpart either—another odd choice for the Arrowverse. Nearly 20 years ago, it made sense to go with something like this for X-Men. However, in the modern age of comic book adaptations, costumes tend to either pay more homage or be much closer to its counterpart in comics.

Saturn Girl, and the on-screen debut of Brainiac 5 (pictures below); follow the same motif as Mon-El—black leather. While consistent with their teammate, both are far from even paying homage to their counterparts. The creators took an interesting take on Brainiac 5—blue skinned with a stark white hair. The discs on his head have been seen in comics before, but traditionally he is portrayed with blonde hair and green skin.

Adaptations take liberties, and on Supergirl, the Legion are filled with them. Most can be forgiven; Brainiac 5 just looks bad. Jesse Rath, the actor portraying the alien gone wrong, has said, “I get better looking throughout the episode. I promise…” I’m not sure what that means exactly, but hopefully Rath’s promise holds true.
