Mister Miracle #5 Review

Mister Miracle #5

Writer: Tom King
Artist: Mitch Gerads

Every issue of Mister Miracle has been nothing short of amazing so far, but issue #5 just claimed the top spot.  Scott Free and Big Barda are the rare exception in comics because they are a married couple in comics and they are a married couple that is flourishing.  This issue highlights everything that makes their marriage one of the most unique in comics.

Scott Free is to be executed by Orion, but he and Big Barda are going to enjoy the last day they have with one another before that happens.  They reminisce about the first time they met in the pits, they make love, and Scott even enjoys his favorite sandwich.  They’re doing everything they can before the inevitable happens, but it’s at that inevitable moment that made this issue worth reading.

At the beginning of the issue, Scott poses a question to Big Barda, but she never really answers it. The question is answered and at the end with one word, and it is epic.  The last page has so much emotion behind it and made the whole issue worth reading.  I don’t want to give too much away, but the last page speaks volumes about the bond Big Barda and Mister Miracle have with one another.

This is my favorite issue of Mister Miracle so far.  There are happy moments with Scott and Barda, there are sad moments, and the moment of the truth at the end. It’s that moment at the end that made this issue stand out to me. Tom King and Mitch Gerads are on an epic roll with Mister Miracle and it looks like they won’t be slowing down anytime soon.  If you are not reading this series, please correct that mistake immediately. This is one series that deserves to be read by all.
