Justice League Dark #8 Review

Writer: James Tynion IV
Penciller: Alvaro Martinez Bueno
Inker: Raul Fernandez
Colorist: Brad Anderson

Zatanna and Wonder Woman chase a lead to find Mordru. Bobo’s in charge of a magical bar where all kinds of mystical creatures gather. And it all leads to a slaughter. The newest issue of Justice League Dark increases the tension while adding a fun character and twist into the mix.

As chapter one to the upcoming arc titled “The Lords of Order,” this story feels a bit more like a chess move than anything else. There are no world-altering events as we’ve seen in previous issues of Justice League Dark. Zatanna and Wonder Woman simply look for information that will aid them in the greater battle. Meanwhile, a group of League members assemble at Bobo’s bar. Everything seems to be going well until the Otherkind appear and tear apart some of the patrons. This all leads to Bobo meeting Doctor Fate and the rest of the lords. No one wins, and no one really loses. Everyone just gets shifted around.

That’s not to say there isn’t plenty to sink your teeth into in this issue. This book has one of the most beautifully painted pages I’ve seen in a comic in a long time. You’ll know it when you see it, but it’s the one where all the panels are assembled into an urn. It adds so much to the story as we see Man-Bat complete his incantation while bar patrons get torn to shreds by the Otherkind.

If you have not been on top of Justice League Dark for a while, this issue is a great place to jump in. An intriguing new story is developing, and no DC fan should miss it. I just wish Deadman would get in on the action.

Overall Score: 9/10
