Dark Nights: The Batman Who Laughs #1

The Batman Who Laughs

Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Riley Rossmo
Colorist: Ivan Plascencia

James Tynion IV and Riley Rossmo have definitely saved the best for last with The Batman Who Laughs. This comic does a great job of explaining how Bruce became this jokerized version of Batman, and it’s pretty scary and terrifying. This jokerized version of Batman works very well because of the meticulous planning of the Joker on Earth -22. The Joker planned all of the mayhem, the killing of all the villains and heroes, and the murder of someone very close to Batman to get Batman to break his one rule.  For those that may not know, that rule is never to kill.  And when Batman breaks that rule, he is now a changed man, but he’s a changed man because the Joker wanted him to be. James Tynion IV does an excellent job of crafting this story, but it is only strengthened by the artwork of Riley Rossmo.

Riley Rossmo just kills it on the art in this issue.  He has knack for drawing things that are horrific and terrifying and he displays those strengths in this issue.  The jokerized children are gruesome, a poisoned Superman looks repulsive, and the jokerized version of Batman is sinister.  The colors of Ivan Plascencia brings everything together and gives the book a horror feel.

This was the best out of all the one shots for DC Metal.  James Tynion IV knows how to write the Joker and this is further proof of that.  He did a great job on all the backup stories during Endgame arc during the New 52 and on Annual #3 as well.  I have always been a fan of Riley Rossmo and hope DC continues to give him bigger titles to work on because he is very talented.  The Batman Who Laughs is a well written story with gruesome art and is a must read this week, so check it out because you won’t regret it.
