According to a report by Variety, Marvel Studios has enlisted Jac Shaffer to write the script for a standalone Black Widow film.
Black Widow was introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2010 via Iron Man 2. Since then, she has become a major character in the MCU as a member of The Avengers. As her popularity has grown, fans have continually petitioned for Black Widow to get her own solo film, but to no avail- until now.
The untitled Black Widow film won’t be first female-led film to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain Marvel, featuring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, is currently in pre-production and will be released in March of 2019.
It can certainly be argued that thanks to the success of 2017’s Wonder Woman, it’s a great time for Marvel to push forward with more female-led films. Hopefully they will continue the trend past Captain Marvel and Black Widow and start bringing more female superheroes to the big screen.
Marvel Studios hasn’t given an official statement about the Black Widow film, and there is no release date as of now.
