Before We Beigin
As Robert Venditti gracefully moves us away from the epic journey through Yuga Khan and his Mighty Metal Golems, we are brought back to the Parallax possessed Superman. What do I mean by brought back? If you’ve been reading Superman, you will know that issues #29 and #30 involve Parallax possessing a bunch of kids, Superman saving them, then getting possessed by Parallax himself, then kicking Sinestro’s butt and taking his ring, and trapping Parallax in the ring. If you want to know more, go read it because it’s pretty good. After Superman #30, the story was totally dropped and Superman #31 and #32 picked up on a new run that is totally unrelated. Well…. Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #30 finally continues the Superman/Parallax crossover in part one of Mind Games. Spoilers ahead.
There’s a priority one threat in space sector 2814. This is where earth is. John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, and Hal Jordan are all in the Green Lantern command center. Stewart sends Kyle and Guy off to resume honor guard patrols and assigns Hal to deal with this threat. Primarily because Hal has the most experience with the witness of the threat, Superman. It is also at this point, before Hal leaves the command center, that he learns that Sinestro is back. This is startling to him because everyone was under the impression that he was killed in action back when Hal detonated warworld.
The sun is peaking through blue sky and large white clouds rolling over Metropolis. Hal meets Superman in the sky high above the city. This truly is a beautiful scene to venerate. Two of DC’s paramount superheroes, floating peacefully against the backdrop of blue sky and white clouds. Friends, engaged in light-hearted conversation, serene.
Suddenly Hal begins to hear someone pleading for help in his mind. Then out pops the reality of the situation. Or so we think. Superman, still possessed by parallax and hungry for a chance to destroy Hal Jordan. Immediately a fight between the two breaks out. A brilliant display of green and yellow as powers collide. Super-Parallax then shouts at Hal “ENOUGH” and knocks the daylights out of him. The next thing we see is Superman asking if Hal is okay. Superman then communicates to Hal that they were just talking, then all of a sudden Hal called Superman Parallax and hit him. So it seems as if something or someone took over Hal’s mind. Is someone messing with him? Hal begins to hear the voice in his head again, pleading for help. He receives a vision of a place. Hector Hammond is trapped here and he is reaching out to Hal telepathically. The final page of the issue shows little yellow beings plugging tubes into Hammond’s head as he is strapped down to a table.
So where exactly is Parallax? It doesn’t seem as if he is in Superman anymore. What does he want with Hector Hammond? We know at one point Parallax supposedly killed Hammond. But how will this crazy telepath, who is known for wanting to kill Hal Jordan, fit into all this? Will Hal Jordan and Superman help the well-known foe of the Green Lantern Corps? Find out next time in Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #31.
I think Robert Venditti is among my favorite writers in DC Comics right now. No joke, everything that I read of his is so good. His stories flow magnificently, character dialogue is superb, he knows how to grab his audience, and when he has someone like Patrick Zircher drawing for him it’s beyond incredible. Zircher’s artwork is pristine, incredibly detailed, and there is nothing lazy about any panel he draws. It’s mind-blowing to me how much work he puts into every detail. After I was done reading this issue, I went through each page trying to find a lazily drawn panel, because many comics have a few panels that look a bit rushed. Not Zircher. Not at all. He is amazing. I consider this writer/artist duo to be an unstoppable force right now. Pick up this issue, it is the beginning of something fantastic. I highly recommend it.
