Green Lanterns #32 Review

The Review

Over the preceding months Sam Humphries provided us with a tremendous Green Lanterns storyline. He is justly a gifted writer and his run on this title was one of my favorites in all of Rebirth. But now we come to a close with his final issue on Green Lanterns and I must say it was a colossal let down. Despite the fact that Volthoom’s story ended abruptly, I enjoyed it abundantly. However after reading issue #32, I think that the “Out of Time” story should have been extended for another issue to give us some more Volthoom action in the place of bringing his story to a screeching halt in issue #31.

As an alternative to that we get Simon and Jessica tweaking out on pancakes, going to a party in freaking Dearborn Michigan, Simon arguing with his childhood friend Nazir, Simon’s other friend Sira trying to set up Jessica with some random guy, Sira getting disturbingly intimate with donuts….What in the hell just happened to this Green Lanterns story?? I get that every once in a while you need a title to have a little bit of filler, but come on! This was over-the-top stupid! The dialogue between characters was cheap, and it felt like it had this social justice warrior political undertone that made me want to vomit. Keep that shit out of our comics, ok? Don’t be like Marvel… Unfortunately I recommend skipping this issue.

It holds no substance to anything happening in the Green Lantern universe, or the DC universe for that matter. I totally love Sam Humphries’ work, and I am by no means taking a stab at him right now, this issue just felt very out of place next to the work we’ve seen thus far from him. I look forward to his upcoming work on Nightwing.
