Action Comics #979 Review

Things are starting to go back to normal in the Superman universe with Clark, Lois, and Jon beginning to move back to Metropolis. Oh and there is a supervillain team consisting of Eradicator, Cyborg Superman, Metallo and Mongul with plans to destroy Superman, you know normal stuff.
Action Comics #979

As this is a new arc, we can clearly see that this one will center around the supervillain team that was forming in the last one. Here Mogul is added to the team, who was put on ice back in the Trinity run “Better Together”. Action Comics #979They are looking for the Oblivion Stone in Superman’s Himalayan refuge that has since been destroyed. Meanwhile, we see both Clark and Lois looking at apartments back in Metropolis looking to move back to the city. After the events of Superman Reborn and Aftermath, it seems that we are slipping back into our normal Superman.

This run is really starting to feel like 90s Superman tales from Dan Jurgens and I say that with a huge smile on my face. I couldn’t be happier that Action Comics is going the route of Superman just fighting the baddies. With nods to New 52 here as well like Klon and Dratania showing up in the Himalayan refuge. Of course, these characters were written by Dan Jurgens, but it is still a nice touch. All leading up to a pretty big final page reveal bringing back one HUGE foe into the fold.Action Comics #979

Following the themes from the story, art here is very 90s feeling, in the best ways possible. Reading this really brings you back and has a very nostalgic feel to the art as well. Zircher had to draw quite a few different characters here and he pulls it off with ease. Even the letters by Rob Leigh really lend to this nostalgic feeling, making this an astounding all-around effort by the art team.

Dan Jurgens is back in full swing, with Superman Reborn out of the way we are moving on to the stories he likes to tell. Oh boy, is it fun stuff to read this is exactly the type of stories I wanted from this title.
