Gotham is on fire, the team is in disarray, the League of Shadows clearly has the upper hand. Batwing and Azrael are MIA, with Cassandra Cain being torn about who she really is. This is where we left off the last issue, can the team pull things together or will this hot dumpster fire consume Gotham?
We begin with Batman and Batwoman looking for some help from a familiar face, Gordon. Thinking this was all Joker’s doing, Gordon is enlightened by Batman and Batwoman, this isn’t the attack this is the distraction. With Mayor Hady dead, the Deputy Mayor is locking down the city as a response. Consequently, they are asking Gordon to reason with him and evacuate the city, to save everyone.
Cassandra Cain has been the main focus of this arc so far and this issue delves into her connection with Shiva even more. As a result, Cain is torn between what she was raised to be and what she is now, with Shiva, aka her Mom making things more complicated. All Cain wants is an answer from Shiva, why did you abandon me? But at what cost will the answer come at, if the answer comes at all.
Tynion continues to amaze this issue, with wall to wall action and intrigue. Each page has a new twist and turn, as the League of Shadows plans continues to play out. Tynion has managed to make this All-Star Bat-Team the underdogs, with them fighting for their lives. Not to mention a surprise appearance at the end, with an unlikely team-up possible in the near future.
Duce doing the majority of the pencils here with some help from Blanco on a flashback sequence. Duce really shines here with all of the action sequences, not to mention his expressions, which this issue is packed with. While Sinclair compliments Duce’s pencils beautifully with his color work throughout the issue, really bringing panels to life.
DC is has been knocking it out of the park recently, not only on Batman titles but across their whole lineup. The best current title always ends up being whichever one I read last. For now, that is Detective Comics, but it’s sure to change soon.
